Having read all in the link, why not cut with a triode based amp @ 78 rpm for better bandwidth with a microgroove (stereo?) system for better HF response? Problem is, I think you would either need huge amps to provide enough power for a feedback cutter to modern levels, or you would have to design a non-feedback stereo cutter that was capable of being driven by lower wattage single ended class A triode amps. I still wonder if something like that could be made that would be of high quality by using piezo rather than magnetic technology, because less energy is "wasted" in making it conform to the record characteristic and perhaps the rest could be done by careful mechanical engineering to achieve proper damping and HF response, perhaps with high enough impedance to be driven directly by a tube in cathode follower (6AS7 in parallel?) configuration with no output transformer. I would love to research and try to build such a system....
Now THAT would be an interesting trip into using outdated technologies!
BTW, Re: 78s in general, are not some club records being cut @ that speed for more punch and dynamics today? |
