Personally, I find that the colored ones work better than the clear. My stylus seems to skate on the clear ones. I would also avoid the metalic looking "gold" colored ones. I think they contain some sort of mika or even a metal that makes them record worse. For some reason, the purple opaque ones seem especially good.

The bigger the better! They don't carry the 10 or 11" plates in my supermarket, but that would be ideal. You have to cut the rim off to record, so you are going to end up with 8" of usable surface on a 10" plate.
