Saw someone's offering this essential book on CD now; thought I'd post a review. (no, I'm not the seller, just think anyone who isn't familiar would be interested; this is the book that helped me most)
TITLE: The Recording & Reproduction of Sound, 2nd Ed.
AUTHOR: Oliver Read
DATE: 1952 (mono)
LENGTH: 807 pages
SUBJECT MATTER: Everything about mono cutting up through '52, then some. See scans.
REVIEW: Best generalized book on cutting for hobbyists & pros. Covers basic theory/mechanics of mono record-cutting, 78 and microgroove, hobbyist & pro. Explains well w/ many diagrams & photos. Great detail on how to facet a pro jewel cutting stylus (mono, but would work for stereo if tip radius reduced to 0.7 mil). Includes a survey of several (6 or so) disc recorders, w/ specs incl. freq range. From Meissner home units up to pro RCA lathe and M1-4887 & M1-11850 cutterheads (specs up to 10,000 Hz), & Presto 8D lathe & 1D head. Unfortunately, predates the superb 1954 mono Westrex cutterhead, and doesn't cover Scully lathes (?!), but little else from 1952 seems missing. Info & diagrams on construction of all playback pickup types.
AVAILABILITY: I scrounged a couple years back to find an original 2nd Ed. for $40, they're around $90 now, but now I see this guy's got them online on CD for $12 w/ shipping, good for him
