Hey Jim:
First thought is cutting needle angle. This varies according to blank thickness. Putting the cutting needle on the blank you should see a near verticle reflection with generally a very slight incline to the front 1to say 3 degrees. Or the blanks if not new are old dry and brittle.
Look through the other posts I bet you will addtional information.
Yep! Pricy hobby. Wait till ya bust a few of those $86 sapphire stylus. And beleive me we've all done it here. It's a steep learning curve but the rewards are great.
Give Gib a call he's very helpful and knowlegeable. The home machine can work pretty well.
