I want an opinion on this really. I am in the UK and purchase sheets of 2mm acrylic (or pvc) sheet from the DIY store.
I score 7" with a template I have set up, and cut the disks and play on a jukebox. No problem there. Ever so slight hiss occasionally, but generally a silent-ish cut. No heat necessary.
However, last week I saw a different make of sheet, and thought the material was slightly waxier, and felt less brittle, so I bought a sheet, made some 7" circles, and cut one.
Wow - 100% perfect - no hiss whatsoever! fantastic sound too. Then, after playing half the record, something changed and it was hissing like hell - and the groove had changed its appearance too.
Since then, I cannot cut on either type of sheet without it hissing and being very poor.
So, my question is, did I damage the stylus using the new sheet ? Is this where diamond styli are used ?
Under a microscope it looks perfect, so I cannot see where the problem lies.
Would one cut on this material damage the sapphire stylus ?
If the answer is to get a diamond one, then I will, as the cut was 100% perfect on this material.
Lathe is AR Sugden Connoisseur with Ortofon G0541 amp.

might very well be the stylus. we use only diamond on pvc's, saphire does not really work. they break.
you might get diamond stylii form vinylrecorder.com, but for sure form andyb - he's on this forum too.

hmm..I wonder if you can use a diamond stylus without heating a vacuuming?
Vinylrecorder website says: 'lacquers are dangerous and explosive!
when using a diamond stylus I presume.... |

No, but the cut chip is no matter what kind of stylus it was cut with. |

so it would make sense to cut lacquers with a diamond?
I have read that diamond is best for plastic, because it's harder and more durable.... |

you can pretty much everything with a diamond. note that saphires are shaped a little differently than diamonds (at least the ones we use), so for laquers the choice would be saphires.
