I dont have one, Im just interested in the basic operation of the portable model. Is there a 'start' button for recording?

What is supposed to happen when you turn the recording arm over the disc?
Does the platter start to spin for itself, or is there another mechnanism...

Also there seems to be some debate here wheter the discs can be played properly on modern turntables...
