I use a presto 6n machine.
Im currently using the cutting head and amp from a presto K8.

I have a presto 1-D head (500ohm) that im unsure if its in working condition...
I also have a tube Gates power amp that was manufactured for driving cutting heads (came with the set up/1-D head) which I know needs work. Its freaking huge and heavy.

I wanna get my Presto 1-D head operational since these are pretty solid heads/

What the heck should I do? ? ? ?
Is there any way to test my 1-D head to see if its working without sending audio thru it? This head is a feedback head, yes?

You may want to contact Bruce Leslie at Pro Recording (216)662-1435. This guy is an encyclopedia for presto stuff and is currently rebuilding my 1-C head. He can rewind them for something besides 500 ohm, such at 16 or 8 ohm so you can use any old power amp you want. He will also replace the damping material and get it back up to spec (or better in the case of my 1-C). He has very reasonable rates. I'd suggest calling him.

As far as I know, I thought the 1-D was a NON-feedback head.

Is there any advantage to having a 500 ohm cutterhead/amp? I guess what I'm asking is why have anything other than 4 or 8 or 16?

Thank for the info.

From what I hear, the impedance doesn't matter for quality. As long as the impedance is matched to the amp, it (supposedly) won't make a difference if it's 4/8 or 500 or 150 or whatever.

Thnx for the contact info for Bruce Leslie, gave him a call. Whats funny is that as soon as you posted his info I found his card sitting in my lathe. Sending my head to him, very reasonable rates for complete rebuild/beef up= $125. Also hes gonna rewind the coils for 4 or 8 ohms instead of 500ohms.
