well certainly a different approach to what I was thinking.
If you where only going to cut digital files, all that extra hardware is not needed, the software could handle all those calculations prior to the actual start of the cutting process.
You don't really need a preview as you described, since you could have the program analyze the audio file, then it could just calculate the groove width and so on.
Althought you would need that stuff to cut from an external source. It would also be possible to create all that hardware into a software upgrade/addon.
Another feature that could be cool, is a calculation for sample rate/ turntable speed. Long story short, good half speed cutting, or high speed dubbing.
cut a 7 minute song in 2 minutes, but it still plays back at 45rpm.
I could see using the high speed dubbing for some sort of cutting kiosk. 5 bucks for mp3 to pvc disc conversion in a short period of time, on any street corner, kinda like those old machines.

Also in the realm of computer ideas, check out a free VST applet called:
"KT Drum trigger"
Its available at a variety of places on the web. Google.
Its a VST which looks at an incoming audio file just as a compressor would (with tons of adjustable parameters) and then generates MIDI messages accordingly. The silence between cuts could be sensed, a MIDI event generated, and so on.
Interesting.

sounds interesting, although not need once again. You could just have the software analyze just the actual waveform to map it's pitch. (let call this process pitch mapping).
So you would load a audio file, then click start. The software would load the waveform, analyze it, map the pitch adjustments over the given recording length, then execute the cutting procedure. Control everything from start to finish via the code.
That way all the technician would be responsible for would be changing the plate, loading the waveforms, pressing start, and machine maintenance. |

| I already started to work on something. I figure I can covert the waveform into a array of numbers, and those numbers are basically the pitch mapping. |

yeah, I guess it could be something like that
I was thinking of a more stand alone solution. I was also not going to use midi to control the lathe. I was going for TTL +-5v on off, and TTL +-12v analog.
It seem that your solution is pretty straight forward. Too bad you couldn't use it with wavelab. Any chance that I could take a look at the code, or the plug-in? |

Just though of something neeto you could code into that vst plugin.
Assign a controller number for the groove spacing. Use the linear controller editing of cubase to draw the groove spacing for the track. The higher up the more spacing. Absolute control. |

Wow... see what ya miss when you take a day off ?
Keen VST. Cubase based ? I am currently using Nuendo, but havent seen that plug-in (or dont recall it) in my drop downs.
Am off to Google.

Here's a look at my program. The mechanical system has yet to be worked on, but the audio system is working good. Later tonight I'll make some cuts using the audio from this proggy, and make sure my code RIAA curve works correctly. |

I'm not sure what you mean, but in this software you have the option to by-pass the riaa or not, on all channels. I also just figured out how to implement VST effects, and have added 4 insert effect positions before the RIAA curve.
The nice thing about this software is that it's using 6 channels of a soundcard, this means that all ASIO cards with multi outputs will work, and so will some creative 5.1 cards.
I'm working to implement DirectSound, and the windows multimedia driver so that it will support all multi output cards.
I'm also working on a virtual diameter EQ in the DSP engine for those who do not use stylus heat. |

I have a diameter eq and the paperwork for it I will have a look and see if it has the frequency responce curve or how the diameter eq ajusts the eq if this would help... how are you controling the lathe? are you using midi or a I/O card as Iwould like to do this mod to my lathe!!! _________________ !Work or Bang Time! |

most likely an I/O card. Although this stuff is being handled by my buddy in California, so it will be a moment before the mechanics, and electrics are finalized.
I'm sure with the proper electronics this could be implemented into any cutting system. I'm just handling the audio programming. |
