I cut 2 brand new lacquers 10" from Transco with a standard unused steelneedle - now I get hiss in the grooves..

Am I doing something wrong, or are the steelneedles really only good for a couple of recordings?

And where to get them besides EBAY and Westtech?

thanks

Hi Tape:

Steel needle has a life of about 15 minutes on a good day. Best to use saphire. They will give longer life and quieter groove and if you use the heated type noise decreases even more

damn it - the are diffucult to find, ans westtech takes 10$ each!

I have sapihires, but they all carve up the lacquers with a screeching sound.
Either they are broken, or I cant adjust angle and weight correctly...

Hi Tape:

Hmm! With a home type unit there probably is'nt the range of adjustment available. But I've cut 33RPM using saphire on the what is more then likely the same cutter as you have. Two Speed General Industries Unit. And had no problems.

Am sending you a PM also
