heyhey

saphire didn't gave too good results while cutting into PVC,
i did so years ago and cut into japanese "harmonia" disks
but they weren't probably made from PVC and the result was bad.
(which might also be a problem of the common saphire stylus shape)
diamond is said to be the way to go now,
and instead of PVC, PC might be the better choice..but
research goes on...

greetings

I cut into the blank side of a one sided record using a cold ruby stylus with a Presto 6n. IT cut great and sounded great. I was also cutting onto laserdiscs (also sounded pretty darn good). But, my needle got ruined pretty quick. However, I was (is) pretty new at this, so there is no telling whether it was the material I was cutting that ruined it or just me not knowing what I was doing... I've cut onto them with a sapphire and a GI home suitcase lathe and there was a lot of high pitched hissing. But that, aggain, may just be because I didn't know what I was doing...

use PC (polycarbonat) for now...
this is used in CD-manufacturing (or laserdisk)
PC is also known as LEXAN (which is just a certain brand name for PC material)

Blanks was from PVC?

Sorry, maybe I'm getting mixed up on the nomenclature. The blank was an actual pressed vinyl record from United Record Pressing in Tennessee. But I also cut on cds and laserdiscs. If you want to cut on polycarbonate, you should read here: http://lathetrolls.phpbbweb.com/viewtopic.php?t=1551

As a DJ, I would love to know how the LEXAN stacks up against the PVC dubs. The later handles the same on the turntable (as a pressed record) and I have a couple of dubs from different places (2 different machines) that sound great. The LEXAN looks interesting, but it also looks kind of flimsy compared to the PVC.

Where can I get my hands on some LEXAN?

hey osmose

as a fellow DJ i can give you some incite on my experience with the lexan cuts.

i purchased a diamond stylus from vinylium last fall and had my plastics connection cut me up some 12" blanks. i'm using a presto 6n with a grampian type-c mono head and i cut some drum n bass and dubstep tracks on the lexan. granted the volume is always an issue with my set up even on acetate blanks but the handful of lexan 12"s i managed to cut before my stylus died on me gave great results. they back cue with no issues unlike an acetate which after the first back cue gets a hiss on that first beat. they hold up extremely well - i'd say just as good as a pressed vinyl. the chip came off just as good as it does on acetate blanks too.

i bought my 6n because i dislike playing on cd decks and i wanted to be able to cut my own dubs instead of carrying a cd binder like everyone else in the scene these days. plus i've owned a record label for 6 years now and i feel like a total ass jockeying cds when i'm trying to sell vinyl singles. plus after 16 years of playing wax and going on 30 years of collecting vinyl, it just doesnt seem right to use cd players Smile

i cant wait until mossboss gets his diamond stylus done because i will definitely be getting more lexan blanks from my supplier. plus it's kind of cool to be able to cut blanks in all sorts of different colours instead of just black Smile

my supplier where i get mine done can get them in black, red, white, blue, green, yellow, clear and i think orange. of course the colours are way more expensive but they're still cheaper than apollo's acetates by far. i'd have to get a quote for you depending on how much you want made. hit me up with an idea of how many pieces you want and i'll send you a quote w/shipping to you Smile
