thanks for getting the list together .we should add the capacity of each plant .. then we could estimate world capacity
Uk ........?
curved are now a broker having sold preses to optimal i believe..
they do still cut lacquers
quick press have closed -Alpha preses went to US -not confrmed
total vinyl bought all the independent 12 " alphas x10
the 7" went to record industry
total are selling some of the alphas and galvanic equipment on EBay
thanks

HI - only had nine at independent - unless one is still around the Midlands - and one of those was in pieces - Chris Never got around to Putting the Ninth one together, as production was starting to decrease by then...
...If there was a tenth Press which got sold off, I'm in the Market....! _________________ Resurecting Independent Pressing from the dead... |

Good one all
We would really like to know output of vinyl pressings rather than capacity I am of the view that capacity far exceeds demand as it stands today therefore plant closures very dissapointing (to me anyway)
Reading post's here where machines are going it appears that there is a distinct movement by existing well funded plants in purchasing and mothballing machines
Is this so as to limit competition?
Is this back to the good bad days?
Is it good for vinyl?
This medium has a dedicated following and it always will Besides it had a recent mini boom, is this shrinking rather than expanding?
My view is that it is shrinking
Why?
Once a pressing plant allows itself to be at the mercy of others it's future is about the amount of overdraft available from it's bankers after the operators run out of funds a very short one
When it is all said and done looking at the emerging picture I would have thought that any plant that is not self contained with all the required facilities is facing a grim future due to the fact that cost's of producing a vinyl record will be beyond it's control
A consumer will only pay so much for a vinyl record, now we have the situation that there are to many steps from the artist to the consumer looking to make a living out of it
The cutting lathe which was the mainstay and the tool of the pressing plant has now moved in the realm of mastering studios as a separate profit centre
No cutting lathe No future for any pressing plant

hello
i have a few corrcetions on the list edited july 3th.
switzerland:
turicaphon. they had a very good pressing plant. they closed down in 1990 or so. they have shares from pallas germany or are part owner, so they let press everything there. they just offer the services.
so the only presses left in switzerland, are a manual FABEL and half of a toolex702.
but it takes a while until they are up and running..but they will.hehe
germany:
eldorado is also just a dealer. they just offer the service but they cut and press somewhere else. they used to press at LAMPING before they closed. |

Thank you for that. The list of pressing plants on Page 1 of this post is now updated.
Anyone with more information on these two "secret" plants in the UK, please let us know. |

Flozki hello,
Yes, there should be several Jamaican plants. I believe the brother of the owner of Dynamic Sounds also owns a pressing plant, name eludes me though.
The infamous Tuff Gong too.

Flozki hello,
Bit of my memory came back, think brother of Dynamic Sounds is Sonic Sounds.
Tuff Gong is/was cutting, plating and pressing. Neumann lathe, looks to be VMS 70. Unknown plating equipment, suspect SMT. SMT presses for sure.
Still should be a few plants besides these.

Laser Works, Jamaica
A new vinyl manufacturing service from the CD plant "Laser Works" in Jamaica.
"Our new vinyl machines are fully automated making approximately 25,000 records per week (Monday - Friday). Laser Works is always willing to meet the needs of the customers, we are equipped to please opening Saturdays and Sundays just to make sure your production is on time. As part of our recent expansion we are now able to manufacture 12” vinyl records.
Customers of the vinyl plant must supply stampers & printed labels for production. Labels will be accepted cut or uncut. Because laser works possess the ability to cut label to the proper specs. Label designs can also be sent in from overseas customers for us to get printed and cut for production.
The stampers you supply to laser works is the medium used to transfer the music to vinyl. Manually the process can take from a minute and half to two and a half minutes to produce a single record.
All stampers should be delivered in a flat format, Laser works does all punch and coining of stampers at our facility".

Can anyone confirm this?
